Iran Says the Hormuz Strait Remains Closed Solely to Adversaries

Speaking on state television, Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz is not fully closed, though it is effectively off-limits to enemies.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz is “closed only to enemies” and that the conflict in the Middle East has nearly shut down this vital oil and gas shipping route.

“In our view, the Strait of Hormuz is not completely closed—it is closed only to enemies,” Araqchi said on state television, adding: “There is no reason to allow the vessels of our enemies and their allies to pass through.”

He further noted that Tehran’s military has already provided a “safe passage” for the ships of friendly nations.
