American forces will carry out a military exercise over several days in West Asia
“The drill is designed to showcase the capacity to deploy, spread out, and maintain combat air forces across West Asia,” according to the U.S. Air Force unit under Central Command.

The United States announced a major, multi-day air force exercise in the Middle East on Tuesday (January 27, 2026), as Washington and Tehran remain at odds over Iran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests.
The announcement came a day after the U.S. military said the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group had arrived in the Middle East, significantly increasing U.S. firepower in the region.
The U.S. Air Force component of Central Command, which is responsible for U.S. forces in the region, said in a statement that the exercise would “demonstrate the ability to deploy, disperse, and sustain combat air power” in the Middle East.
No dates or specific locations for the exercise were released.
The protests in Iran began in late December over economic grievances but escalated into a broader movement against the Islamic Republic, with large demonstrations taking to the streets for several days starting on January 8.
A U.S. rights group said on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) that it had confirmed the deaths of more than 6,000 people in the protests and was investigating more than 17,000 other potential deaths.
U.S. President Donald Trump had repeatedly warned Iran that the United States military would intervene if it killed protesters and also encouraged Iranians to seize government institutions, saying, “Help is coming.”
But earlier this month, he backed away from ordering an attack, saying that Tehran had halted more than 800 executions under pressure from Washington.
