Senior Russian military intelligence officer fatally shot in Moscow
Alekseyev is the most recent high-ranking military official to be attacked in the capital since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago.

A high-profile Russian general has reportedly been wounded after being shot multiple times in Moscow.
Vladimir Alekseyev, the deputy head of Russia’s GRU military intelligence, was rushed to the hospital after the attack at a residential building in the city’s northwestern outskirts.
His condition is unknown. Alekseyev is the latest senior military official to be targeted in the capital since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began nearly four years ago.
Ukrainian intelligence (HUR) had previously identified him as a key figure in coordinating missile and air strikes on Ukrainian civilian targets.
Alekseyev was also subject to European Union sanctions after Russia’s GRU military intelligence was accused of being behind the 2018 nerve agent attack in Salisbury, UK.
The US also sanctioned him in 2016 for “malicious cyber activities” during the US presidential election, which Donald Trump won.

Alekseyev has served as the second-in-command of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces since 2011. He was reportedly awarded the Hero of the Russian Federation title by the Kremlin in 2017.
