In the initial phase, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) terminal and runway will handle 20 million passengers per year.

PM Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday (October 8), joining several cities around the world including London, New York and Tokyo that have multiple airports. The state-of-the-art airport is expected to start commercial operations in December.
The airport has been built under a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings and CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited).

Navi Mumbai International Airport will be India’s first fully digital airport and will include pre-booking of vehicle parking slots as well as online baggage drop and immigration services. It will also be supported by a fully automated, AI-enabled terminal.
The 1,160-hectare airport will handle 20 million passengers per year through one runway and terminal in the initial phase. At full capacity, the airport will be able to serve 155 million passengers annually through 4 terminals and 2 runways.
The airport has been constructed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore and has a unique projection of creating over two lakh jobs across sectors including aviation, logistics, IT, hospitality and real estate.
Several airlines, including IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air, have already shared plans to start operations and flights connecting several cities across the country.
Commercial operations will begin in December with about 40% of international traffic, eventually increasing to 75%. Officials said the airport will initially operate for 12 hours a day.
Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Arun Bansal has described Navi Mumbai International airport as a “worry-free airport” due to its automation and digital features. “We are experimenting with AI-enabled baggage tracking in Ahmedabad, and here, you will be able to get a message on your phone, for example, your bag number on the carousel is 20,” he said.
Navi Mumbai International Airport will be India’s first major hub to be connected to multiple transport systems including expressways, metro and suburban rail networks and waterway services.
