“India will not buy oil from Russia”: Trump claims that his friend PM Modi has assured him

Trump told reporters during a White House event that “I was not happy that India was buying oil from Russia and now my friend PM Modi has assured me that we will no longer buy oil from Russia.”

Donald Trump said yesterday, October 15, that his friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told him that India would stop buying oil from Russia, calling the move a “big step” in efforts to isolate Moscow economically.

Trump told reporters during a White House event that “I was not happy that India was buying oil from Russia and now my friend PM Modi has assured me that we will no longer buy oil from Russia.”

“This is a big step and now we are going to get the same thing done from China.”

The Indian embassy did not immediately respond to emailed questions about whether PM Modi had made such a commitment to Trump in Washington.

India’s commitment to stop buying this oil from Russia would mark a potential turning point in global energy diplomacy as Washington intensifies its efforts to suppress Moscow’s oil revenues amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

It would also signal a major shift by one of Moscow’s top energy customers and could reshape the calculus for other countries that import Russian crude. The move comes as Trump seeks to leverage bilateral ties to drive economic isolation rather than rely on multilateral sanctions.

During his remarks to reporters, Trump added that India cannot stop the shipment “immediately”, and that it “has a little bit of a process, but that process will be completed shortly”.
