After 40 years, MTV’s iconic music channels are shutting down. Netizens call it ‘end of an era’
After returning from school or college, they would tune in to listen to pop music and the latest releases, but the channel is turning over a new leaf and has announced that it will be shutting down some of its music-focused channels – MTV 80s, MTV Music, Club MTV, MTV 90s, and MTV Live.
These channels will shut down in the UK by December 31, 2025, Paramount Global announced on October 12, 2025. Don’t worry! This is not happening in India. The closures will hit the United Kingdom and Ireland first. Later, similar shutdowns are expected across Europe and other countries, including Poland, Australia, Brazil, Austria, France, Hungary and Germany.
The brand is shifting away from the music videos and artistic promotions for which it was known among its audience. However, MTV HD will continue to air reality TV shows, which, if you think about it, are a guilty pleasure for most entertainment lovers.
Why is MTV closing iconic music channels ?
It is believed that MTV is shutting down its music channels due to changing viewership patterns. As TikTok, YouTube, and Spotify have taken over the music world, MTV has seen a drastic drop in the number of people consuming music videos through its channel.
The decision follows Paramount Global’s merger with Skydance Media a few months ago. It also triggers $500 million in global cost-cutting plans. But the closure of music channels marks the end of an era.
