Brazilian President Lula alleges that Trump is attempting to create a new United Nations under US control

Brazilian President Lula alleged that Donald Trump is attempting to set up a US-led alternative to the United Nations, following Trump’s launch of the ‘Board of Peace,’ which he said could function alongside or even replace the UN.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday accused US President Donald Trump of trying to create a “new United Nations” under his control.

This came after Trump launched his so-called “peace commission” earlier this week.

According to Reuters, Lula said at a public event, “President Trump is proposing to create a new United Nations, and he will be the sole owner of it.” He did not directly mention Trump’s initiative.

Trump had previously hinted that his “peace commission” could replace the United Nations, raising concerns among diplomats and world leaders.

However, a day later, he softened his stance, expressing hope that the two organizations could work together and claiming it could bring about “some very unique things” in the world.

Lula’s comments came amid a flurry of diplomatic activity involving Brazil, the US, and China.

The remarks followed a phone call between Lula and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in which they expressed support for Brazil and the Global South.

According to the Xinhua news agency, Xi assured Lula that China would stand with Latin America’s largest economy and urged both countries to continue playing their roles in the United Nations.

Earlier, Lula had criticized recent US actions against Venezuela. The Brazilian leader reiterated this in an article published this week in The New York Times.

Lula’s office confirmed the 45-minute call, saying the two leaders “reiterated their commitment to strengthening the United Nations to maintain peace and stability in the world.”

The conversation also touched on travel and economic relations. The Brazilian government said Lula told Xi that Brazil would take steps to exempt Chinese citizens from certain categories of short-stay visas in exchange for China’s visa waiver policy implemented last year.
